Root Canal Therapy in Dacula, GA

We at Lanier Valley Dentistry, will be happy to have you do your root canals with us. Root canals are used to fix a tooth that is extremely decayed or infected. If a root canal treatment is not performed for a very decayed tooth, the tissue surrounding the affected tooth can get infected, and abscesses may form. The root canal is the natural cavity in the center of the tooth. The pulp chamber is the soft area situated in the root canal. The root canal houses the tooth's nerve, and the nerve is responsible for detecting hot or cold sensations.

When the pulp or tooth nerve tissue is damaged, there will be breaking down that will permit bacteria to set in and multiply within the pulp chamber. This can lead to an infection that could spread beyond the end of the root of the tooth, and the result is an abscessed tooth. Abscess refers to the pus that forms at the root of the affected tooth. An infection in a tooth's root canal can also lead to the loss of bone around the tip of the root, and swelling that may extend to the neck, face or head of the individual. It can also create a hole in the tooth that can lead to damage into the gum.

Root Canal Treatment

Getting a root canal treatment requires two visits to the clinic. First, our dentist or endodontist will take an x-ray of the root canal to determine if there is an infection in the surrounding bone or not. If there is an infection, the treatment will begin. Our dentist will numb the area with anesthesia if necessary. Next, they will place a sheet of rubber [rubber dam] around the affected tooth to keep it dry and saliva-free for the process. After this, our dentist will drill a hole in the tooth and get debris, bacteria, and decayed nerve tissues removed with root canal files. Occasionally, sodium hypochlorite or water will be used to flush out the debris.

After the cleaning, the tooth is sealed, and a temporary filling used to keep contaminants from getting back into the cleaned tooth. During your second visit, our dentist will place a sealer paste, and a rubber compound referred to as gutta percha into the tooth’s root canal. Then, a filling is used to seal the exterior access hole created at the beginning. If the tooth needs further restoration, given the extent of the damage, our dentist will discuss this with you and get it done perfectly.

After the Procedure

After the completion of a root canal, the tooth may feel sensitive for the first few days. This is due to irritation and inflammation of the tissues. Pain killers can help to make you more comfortable.

A dentist or an endodontist should perform root canal treatments perfectly, and our specialized team is equal to the task. If you have inquiries or want to meet with our special dentists, you can reach us at Lanier Valley Dentistry or call us via (678) 802-8654.
