Children before the age of twelve will likely think a trip to the dentist is a terrifying experience and one is tempted to forget about going through the trouble of taking them for an appointment time and time again. However, it is vital that the child or children regularly visit the dentist, not just because this is a good chance to teach them how to keep good oral hygiene. It is also because the child’s teeth need to be monitored as they develop and see if there is a need to adjust accordingly.

Developing Teeth

The growth of children’s teeth can be divided into two stages before maturity. The period where they grow out their milk teeth, called primary teeth, is called teething. When this happens will greatly depend on the child, some range from 12 months so they are a year old. The period where their mature or secondary teeth replaces the primary teeth is called eruption of secondary teeth and usually happens when the child is around six years old.

During the development of the child’s teeth, we have different ways to help the child - prevention, education, and treatment. For treatment, for example, one can use braces on children whose teeth are growing crooked. This will give better results than if braces were applied to adults since children’s teeth are still developing. Also, when secondary teeth have mostly grown out, we can help them get their wisdom teeth extracted since children can recover much easier than adults would from extractions or injuries to the teeth and gums.

Prevention

For prevention, we can, for example, provide fluoride treatments where fluoride is a mineral that helps fight and so prevents tooth decay and encourages tooth growth. Unlike an adult’s teeth, children’s teeth can grow back from tooth decay since they are still developing. When applied, the fluoride comes in either foam, paste or gel form and is given by either a mouthguard or by direct application to the teeth by exposure for a few minutes, and no rinsing, eating or drinking for 30 minutes afterward.

We will also always will find opportunities to teach children about how to maintain good oral health, such as knowing how to properly brush and floss their teeth, what foods to avoid to prevent tooth decay, what kind of oral diseases exists and how they can avoid them, and what to do if they do have them. In educating your children on caring for their teeth, we aim to prevent them from developing serious problems at some point in the future.
