Who Is a Dental Implant Candidate? Dacula, GA

Around 125 million Americans are missing at least one tooth, according to the American Dental Association. It is not uncommon for people to consider dental implants to replace these missing teeth and give them a fully functional chew and bite with their mouth again.

If you are considering dental implants as a tooth replacement, there are a few factors you must consider first to determine if you are a good candidate for the procedure.

Our Lanier Valley Dentistry office will help go over your options after a careful examination, but here are a few things to consider before seeing us.

Most People Are Good Candidates

Regardless of the type of dental implant you desire, you will most likely be an ideal candidate for dental implants. This is due to recent advancements in the dental field that allow us to fix any issues that would have prevented them in the past, allowing most to benefit.

If you suffer from bone density loss, you will be required to get a bone graft first. This procedure requires that we take bone from your body, usually the mouth, tibia or hip, a cadaver bone, animal bone, or a synthetic bone, and implant it into the bone lying beneath your gums.

It is a long recovery, usually requiring four months to a year of recovery time before an implant can be placed. We can restructure your mouth completely if necessary, to fit a set of dental implants in, which we will discuss with you after a full examination.

What Are the Types of Dental Implants?

There are several types of dental implants available to you. The first is called an endosteal implant, which has become the most popular in recent dental history. This type of dental implant involves screws, cylinders, or blades that are surgically placed into the jawbone.

The materials used are biocompatible, which allows them to fuse to your underlying bone without fear of it being rejected by your body. After getting the framework inside your gums, you will have to allow it to heal and fuse to the bone, which can take several weeks.

Afterward, a prosthetic is placed on top and can consist of either a crown or a bridge, which is then secured usually by cement or another type of adhesive.

The second type of dental implant is called a subperiosteal implant, which is placed on the jawbone. A metal framework, often titanium, is placed on top of the bone and used as a “post” for the gum to hold the prosthesis in place. This type of dental implant was created before any other implant, but it is only used seldom these days due to its low success rate in comparison to an endosteal implant.

The latest dental implant is called the All-on-4® Treatment Concept, which uses titanium posts that are placed in the bone. These dental implants are one of the only same-day implants on the market, due to their innovative technology.

Our office can create a set of teeth the same day we do the surgery, taking only around 30 minutes to create an accurate and form-fitted set. This surgery only uses four implants, which makes them less invasive than an endosteal implant.
