What Can Cause Bleeding Gums Aside from Gum Disease?

Posted on 8/23/2021 by Lanier Valley Dentistry
What Can Cause Bleeding Gums Aside from Gum Disease?Bleeding gums are mostly a sign of gum disease. Continuous gum bleeding can also be due to plaque buildup on the surface of your teeth. Apart from gum disease, there are several other conditions that can cause bleeding in your gums. Read on for other causes of bleeding gums.

Brushing Too Hard

Brushing is a good oral cleaning habit that gets rid of bacteria on your teeth. As much as it is a good practice, brushing too hard can cause bleeding gums. Excessive pressure on your gums will tear the tissues and cause bleeding. If left unaddressed, the exposed tissues can cause infections. Brushing too hard will also wear down the enamel, leading to other conditions like tooth cavities and sensitivity. When brushing, it is recommended that you do it gently using a soft-bristled toothbrush.

Ill-fitting Dental Appliances

You can experience bleeding gums due to ill-fitting dentures and other dental appliances. For instance, when these appliances fit too tightly, they may damage the gums and cause bleeding. This underlines the importance of having perfectly fitting dentures. If you feel any discomfort caused by dental appliances, book an appointment with us for a checkup. If we find that the dentures are not fitting correctly, we will create better-fitting ones for more comfortable usage.

Vitamin Deficiencies

When your body lacks a sufficient supply of certain vitamins, you will experience bleeding gums. Vitamin K and vitamin C deficiencies will make your gums bleed easily. Therefore, it is important to eat a balanced diet that incorporates all these nutrients. This will not only strengthen your teeth but also ensure good gum health. When you notice persistent gum bleeding, you should come in for immediate treatment. Bleeding gums could be a sign of an underlying condition that needs urgent attention.
