Changes to Make to Your Lifestyle for a Healthier Smile

Everyday people come into our office with questions about their smile, and it is our joy to help them take steps toward improving their smile and their lifestyle. Studies show there are numerous benefits of a healthy smile. We suggest making a few simple lifestyle changes to get you started on the path toward optimal health and a confident smile.
Brush and Floss Daily
Our first recommendation is to cultivate a daily habit of oral hygiene. We suggest brushing your teeth with a gentle toothbrush twice a day. As you brush, maintain a 45 degree angle between the toothbrush and your tooth, and don't forget to change your toothbrush regularly. Changing your toothbrush four times a year is optimal. Floss your teeth once a day, which will help to stimulate your gums and remove food particles in hard to reach places. This simple routine will take care of most of your plaque buildup.
Avoid Tobacco and Alcohol
Another lifestyle change we recommend is avoiding the use of tobacco and alcohol. If you stop smoking, you will have a much better chance of avoiding oral cancer and other health issues. In addition, tar and nicotine in cigarettes discolors your teeth and irritates your gums.
Choosing to avoid alcohol is also advantageous. Alcohol is responsible for dental problems in an indirect way. Alcohol dries out your mouth, which is a good environment for bacteria to flourish. An overgrowth of bacteria often leads to tooth decay.
Lastly, we encourage our patients to pay attention to their diet. What you eat and drink largely contributes to the amount of plaque in your teeth. The less sugar you consume, the less gum problems and cavities you might have. You should also consider eating good dairy products and protein as well as plenty of fruits and vegetables.
These simple changes to your lifestyle will contribute to a healthier smile. Please come see us for your regular cleaning and dental checkup, and we can look for other ways to improve your smile.
