What Causes Dental Crowding?

Posted on 3/22/2021 by Lanier Valley Dentistry
What Causes Dental Crowding?Crowded teeth are a common problem for both children and adults. In fact, most people who visit the dentist go to fix a dental crowding issue. Studies by the Journal of Physiological Anthropology stated that thirty percent of people have an overcrowding problem with their teeth.

Dental crowding occurs when your mouth does not have enough space for your teeth. Dental crowding is a type of malocclusion that misaligns the teeth. When teeth do not have enough space to grow, they will grow in unnatural positions, trying to find spaces for them to grow. This will lead to crowded, misaligned, or twisted teeth. The question, however, remains: what causes dental crowding?

Causes of Dental Crowding

While we all want perfectly aligned teeth, this might not always be the case. Many people either have crooked or misaligned teeth. Here are some of the reasons why you have crowded teeth;

Genetics

Genetics can be responsible for the shape or size of your teeth or jaw. This can cause crowding. If you have crowded teeth in your mouth, it is likely that one of your family members also has crowded teeth. Therefore, it is important to visit a dentist during your early stages to ensure they can fix the problem easily.

Large Sized Teeth

If you have larger teeth, then they are highly likely to cause crowding. This will mean that the teeth do not fit well on the jaw, which results in crowding.

Childhood Habits

Childhood habits such as thumb-sucking and the use of pacifiers can lead to crowding of teeth. This is because sucking the thumb or using pacifiers for a long period will cause the teeth to shift out of position, which will now lead to crowding.

The Loss of Baby Teeth

If you lose your baby teeth either too early or too late, then this can affect how your permanent teeth will grow. Thus, the teeth may become misaligned which will lead to crowding.

Crowded teeth or misaligned teeth can put you at risk of developing oral health problems. They can lead to problems such as cavities, abscesses, tooth decay, or even gum diseases. Thus, it is important to consult your dentist who can provide treatment options for the crowding.
