Dental Sealants Pros and Cons

Posted on 1/25/2021 by Lanier Valley Dentistry
Dental Sealants Pros and Cons]Tooth decay and dental cavities are very common dental problems. Multiple factors affect our dental structure's overall health, including our dietary habits, oral hygiene, and internal health factors. Where good oral hygiene practices can prevent tooth decay, it does not guarantee optimal protection, especially if you are a regular smoker or consume high amounts of sugary foods.

If you want to protect your teeth from decay, you should consider integrating other dental treatments, such as dental sealants, besides optimal oral healthcare practices. However, there is a significant amount of controversy surrounding the use of dental sealants and their effectiveness in preventing dental decay.

What are Dental Sealants?

Dental Sealants are a type of coating that goes over your teeth to prevent tooth decay. The sealant's job is to prevent plaque formation on the teeth. Sealants are most commonly applied on the back teeth, molar, and premolars, and as they have a lot more crevices and depressions, where food particles may get lodged within the teeth.

There are two main types of sealants, namely glass ionomer, and resin. Both have proven to be quite effective in protecting against dental decay, despite much of the controversy surrounding their ability to fight tooth decay in children.

Pros of Dental Sealants

•  helps protect against tooth decay
•  Quick and painless procedure
•  Cheaper than alternate dental treatments such as dental fillings.
•  Helps improve oral hygiene by preventing plaque formation.
•  Safe to use and approved by the American Dental Association

Cons of Dental Sealants

•  Need replacement every five to ten years
•  Cannot be applied over decayed teeth – They aren't a restorative dentistry option but a preventive treatment.
•  Can do more damage than good if teeth are not appropriately examined before application as they can seal in dental decay.

Ensure you consult your dentist and discuss the pros, cons, and risks associated with dental sealants before application.
