Can You Reverse Enamel Erosion?

Posted on 9/11/2023 by Lanier Valley Dentistry
Can You Reverse Enamel Erosion?Enamel plays a vital role in protecting the tooth against bacteria and cavities. It also gives the teeth a white appearance. However, factors such as aging, acid consumption, and injury can lead to enamel erosion. Unfortunately, enamel cannot repair itself if it undergoes damage. This means that you cannot reverse enamel erosion. Nevertheless, you can prevent erosion from occurring by implementing tips such as:

Good Oral Care

Good oral care involves cleaning the gums and teeth and ensuring that what you put in your mouth will not harm your oral health. While brushing at least twice daily is good, you must also ensure that you use the right cleaning tools. This may involve a soft-bristled toothbrush that will not damage the enamel. You may also need to consider a mouthwash to kill harmful bacteria likely to damage the enamel.

Fluoride Treatments

Fluoride performs magic on the tooth enamel. It strengthens the enamel and reverses early signs of cavities. You can add fluoride to your teeth by brushing with toothpaste and mouthwash. A dentist can also provide fluoride treatment if you have weak enamel.

Limit Your Intake of Acidic and Sugary Items

Acid is the biggest enemy of tooth enamel. It eats away the enamel, exposing the tooth to harmful bacteria. Sugary foods and drinks can also harm the enamel. When sugar remains in the mouth for a long period, bacteria consume it and release acid. The acid will then weaken the enamel, causing severe damage.

Schedule Dental Appointments

Dental appointments aim to clean and examine the mouth. This eliminates harmful bacteria and plaque likely to cause enamel erosion. In addition, a dentist may spot a weak enamel and suggest a treatment before the issue worsens. Do you want to strengthen your teeth' enamel and prevent cavities?
